The Law Firm of Elliott & Davis, PC is pleased to announce that attorney John W Stephen is bringing his background in community development, environmental programs and nonprofit law to complement our land use and real estate practice areas. John joins the firm while maintaining responsibility as the Executive Director of the Allegheny River Towns Enterprise Zone.

John Stephen concentrates his practice in the application of environmental, land use, and nonprofit law to improve communities throughout Western Pennsylvania. He has held many roles with non-profit organizations, including Founder, General Counsel, Executive Director, Board Member, and Consultant. He is educated as an engineer, attorney and non-profit manager, from Penn State, Columbia and Carnegie Mellon, respectively.

John was a corporate environmental attorney for three years before starting a practice in the non-profit sector, initially as co-founder of and Counsel for the Friends of the Riverfront. In fifteen years with the Friends of the Riverfront he served as Board member, Executive Director and General Counsel. He managed the acquisition of urban river frontage from a national railroad for the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and raised over $3,000,000 for construction throughout the City of Pittsburgh.

John remains active in other recreational and conservation projects as an independent consultant or as a Board member. He has worked or is serving on behalf of the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy, the Nine Mile Run Greenway Project, the Allegheny Trail Alliance, the Regional Environmental Education Center and other trail and conservation organizations. He has also applied his professional experience to community development and brownfield remediation throughout the region serving as a project consultant to the West-to-West Coalition and as Executive Director for the Allegheny River Towns Enterprise Zone. His expertise in land use and environmental law complemented by a diverse set of professional skills has served John and the organizations he has nurtured well as they work to better communities.
