Biography
John Stephen's practice is focused on environmental, land use, nonprofit corporation and community development law. He has held many roles with non-profit organizations, including Founder, General Counsel, Executive Director, Board Member, and Consultant. He is educated as an engineer, attorney and non-profit manager, from Penn State, Columbia and Carnegie Mellon, respectively.

John was a corporate environmental attorney for three years before starting a practice in the non-profit sector, initially as co-founder of and Counsel for the Friends of the Riverfront. In fifteen years with the Friends of the Riverfront he served as Board member, Executive Director and General Counsel. He managed the acquisition of urban of river frontage from a national railroad for the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and raised over $3,000,000 for construction throughout the City of Pittsburgh. He left the organization to make way for a new generation of leadership... but the Three Rivers will never leave him.

John remains active in other recreational and conservation projects as an independent consultant or as a Board member. He has worked or is serving on behalf of the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy, the Nine Mile Run Greenway Project, the Allegheny Trail Alliance, the Regional Environmental Education Center and other trail and conservation organizations.

He has also applied his professional experience to community development and brownfield remediation throughout the region serving as a project consultant to the West-to-West Coalition and as Executive Director for the Allegheny River Towns Enterprise Zone.

John has a diverse set of professional skills that can contribute to a variety of development efforts. He's a strong writer and organized project manager. His blend of engineering, legal, and community experience provides a firm foundation for strategic thinking and creative problem solving. His varied background in public and private sector application of federal, state and local laws and policy-making keeps him current and able to share the latest in legal reasoning. Colleagues trust his facilitation and collaboration skills that have mobilized communities around innovative ideas and visions - from fledgling to sophisticated.
